Plot Summary

Bakhita means "the fortunate one". It is the real story of a Sudanese slave who was bought by a wealthy Italian merchant at the end of the Nineteenth century.
When people from the rural community first see the woman and her night-black skin, they are scared and suspicious. However, thanks to her awesome smile and good-natured heart, Bakhita teaches those people – and all the ones she meets along the way – that there is an inner richness in all human beings.

An interview with Giacomo Campiotti
Why did you want to tell Bakhita’s story?
This is the story of a woman who had an amazing life, and made important choices that today make a deep impression on us, and help us understand why we are all so lost, and that another world is also possible. I just wanted to be the vehicle for such a story, with the aim to show a real person, not just a holy picture.
