Plot Summary

On June 9, 1918, the Austrian battleship Szent István, the pride and glory of the Austro-Hungarian navy, is sailing escorted by the greatest ships of the Imperial naval force, heading for its first mission. On the other front, that same night, Sicilian Captain Luigi Rizzo, as usual, goes on patrol along the enemy coasts, on board of a MAS, a small armed motorboat used by the Royal Italian Navy during World War I. Rizzo is about to get back to the harbour, when he notices an anomalous trail of smoke on the horizon. He goes closer, recognises the enemy ships, and immediately reacts by attacking the Austrian colossus. This is how one of the most impressive naval battles of the World War I – a David vs. Goliath fight – starts. Astuteness and speed of action prevail on the great means of the Austrian fleet. A few torpedoes, launched by the MAS, mark the end of the Szent István. On board of one of the Austrian ships there are some cameramen, who were supposed to film the imposing victories of their own fleet, which were taken for granted by Austrian officials. They will instead film the sinking of the new battleship, with dramatic images that would go do down in history.
